Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Breastfeeding during the early stages of life is the optimal way to feed infants. OBJECTIVES. To identify the benefits of breastfeeding, the influence on oral habits and the difference between breastfeeding and bottle feeding through a review of scientific studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A literature review of 20-year-old articles was conducted in online databases searching for research literature in biomedical and biological sciences. RESULTS. Direct breastfeeding of the mother avoids retrognathism and a better relationship between the jaws is obtained, and malocclusions are reduced. CONCLUSIONS. Functional alterations or bottle-feeding can negatively affect oral and dental development.
