Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To compare maternal and neonatal serum concentrations of soluble E-selectin in preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant. METHODOLOGY: A case-control study was conducted in 180 pregnant women (group A, 90 preeclamptic and group B, 90 normotensive pregnant women) who attended the Central Hospital "Dr. Urquinaona", Venezuela. The general characteristics, laboratory parameters and maternal-neonatal serum concentrations of soluble E-selectin were evaluated. RESULTS: Compared with patients in group B, patients in group A had higher soluble selectin E concentrations (p <0.0001). However, neonates in this group showed significantly lower concentrations (p <0.0001). When comparing maternal and neonatal concentrations in each of the groups, no significant differences were found between neonatal maternal concentrations in group A (p = 0.6849) but significant differences were found in group B values (p <0.0001). CONCLUSION: Preeclamptic patients have higher soluble E-selectin concentrations compared to healthy normotensive pregnant women. However, their neonates show significantly lower concentrations compared with neonates of normotensive pregnant women.
